The Chiltern Society has been busy preparing the new Meadow Nature Reserve, which is adjacent to the River Misbourne in Chalfont St Peter.
A group of volunteers, along with a ranger, supported Chalfont St Peter Parish Council (CSPPC) in clearing growth from the site border. They also laid wood chip along the hedge line to help retain water in the summer months.
The session took place on Tuesday, February 18, and marked the first of four events to complete the work at the nature reserve.
Gavin Johnson, head of conservation at The Chiltern Society, said: “We’ve been working with CSPPC for many years, helping manage nature reserves and commons in the parish.
“Over this winter, our volunteer teams have been helping with the second phase of the exciting development of the new Meadow Nature Reserve which will be opening to the public spring/summer 2025. Our volunteers have been carrying out a range of tasks, from tree planting and creating a woodland walk to installing information signs and ensuring the reserve is safe for public access.
“This relatively small reserve is a real gem which helps connect existing habitats in the parish. As it is adjacent to the River Misbourne, it also has great value to the wider Chilterns landscape, enhancing and protecting important flood meadow habitat which is increasingly under threat. The reserve is a great natural asset for the local community and for the Chilterns as a whole, so we are excited to be involved with the parish and other partners in its creation.”
On Facebook, CSPPC wrote: “Big thank you to Chiltern Society volunteers. What a great day with a lot achieved in the spring sunshine.”
