Rickmansworth has been highlighted as one of the areas where drivers are being targeted as part of ‘crash for cash’ scams.
This scam sees fraudsters staging or causing accidents for financial gain.
According to the Guardian, this type of scam increasingly involves moped riders who, after initiating a crash, insist on taking a photo of the victim’s driving licence or insurance documents. These details are then used to take out vehicle insurance policies in the victim’s name so that fake claims can be made.
The newspaper has named Rickmansworth, alongside Hertford, St Albans and Chelmsford, as areas where drivers are being targeted. Reportedly, more than 1,100 fraudulent motor insurance policies were taken out between summer 2024 and March 2025 by scammers using details from ‘crash for cash’ victims.
Drivers are advised never to share copies of an insurance policy or driving licence following a collision. The National Accident Helpline advises that you should exchange names, addresses, contact numbers, registration details and the vehicle owner’s name with others involved. They also state that you should not apologise or admit fault in the moments after a crash.
