Work for the new rail freight interchange on the former Radlett Aerodrome site is progressing, with the recent appointment of a company to carry out the final phase of main works.
Strabag UK recently secured a £200million contract for the works at SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett.
Located on the 1,000-acre site of the former aerodrome, the interchange will provide 335,000 square metres of logistics space linking the Midland Main Line railway via a new two-road rail connection.
Works are expected to take over three years and hope to remove up to 1,800 heavy goods vehicle journeys from the roads, according to SEGRO.
Asked the benefits of the scheme, technical director at Strabag’s UK building arm Ian Burford said: “The project [will] play a major role in reducing emissions and congestion by shifting freight from road to rail.”
The multi-million-pound development will incorporate a new underpass as well as overhead line equipment works.
Senior director for national markets Charles Blake spoke to RADLETTnews and said: “Strabag’s appointment [has] marked a vital next phase of the project.”
