A railway bridge has been significantly damaged after being struck by a lorry today (Thursday, January 15) after 5am today causing widespread disruption to train services.
Engineers attended the scene at Harper Lane Bridge, where a road vehicle had hit the structure, resulting in a large section of brickwork falling towards the railway line below.
As a result, speed restrictions were imposed and some train services were diverted.
According to Network Rail, at 12.15pm, the incident had led to 162 trains being delayed by a total of 1,643 minutes.
Five services were cancelled, while a further eight were unable to complete their full journeys.
A speed restriction remains in place on one line, and staff are continuing to work at the scene to prevent any further debris from reaching the track.
Passengers are warned there may be knock-on delays, as a full evening service is currently planned.
Travellers are advised to check their journeys with train operators or National Rail before travelling
