Drivers on the M25 were perhaps left doing a double-take when a cyclist was seen riding along the motorway near Rickmansworth.
A fellow traveller on the road recorded footage of the biker, riding a BMX, making his way down the hard shoulder. He was spotted between junction 19 for Watford and junction 18 for Rickmansworth at around 3:30pm on January 8.
Jason Brown, who’s dashcam captured the alarming video, said to RICKYnews: “I was shocked to see a bike going down the hard shoulder of a motorway, especially in such poor driving conditions with no lights or helmet.
“Also, the hard shoulder runs out a little further down the motorway so they must have had to join the main carriageway for a bit.”
In the video, a car ahead can be seen braking after it spots the cyclist before Mr Brown passes the rider on his left.
Cycling on a motorway remains an illegal act in England, with those caught doing so liable to be fined.
Having posted the footage to social media, someone in the comments stated that they had reported the incident to the police.
A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: “Police received several calls at around 3.30pm on Saturday 8 January, reporting that a man was cycling along the hard shoulder of the M25 motorway, between junctions 19 and 18.”
“Officers attended and carried out a search of the area.
“There was no sign of him cycling on the motorway, but a man matching the same description was found cycling near the exit slip at junction 18.
“Words of advice were given.”
