Batchwood Hall in St Albans is to be given a new lease of life after plans were approved to turn it into an upmarket hotel.
The major overhaul of the building, built in 1874, was given the green light at a meeting of St Albans City & District Council’s (SACDC) Development Management Committee on Monday, September 2.
The three-storey manor house was a private estate until it was purchased by SACDC in 1935. It then became a golf course in 1936 before it was turned into a nightclub in the 1970s.
The club closed in 2020 during the pandemic and the building has been vacant ever since.
Once the renovation is complete, the hotel will feature 16 rooms, a restaurant and a bar.
The planning decision report says: “Subject to a number of conditions, the proposed scheme would provide benefits through securing a long-term viable use for this attractive building.
“Furthermore, the development provides benefits in relation to tourism and the rural economy.”
