A non-profit organisation in Watford has made it its mission to reduce food waste and has successfully saved 26-and-a-half tonnes worth in just 18 months.
In 2017, Random Café began its business journey to reduce food waste and campaign to make our food system fairer and more sustainable.
The café reuses food that has been over stocked and damaged in supermarkets, as well as products that have passed their best before date so nothing affects the environment.
Initially opened in Watford, Random Café is currently situated at The Barn in Watford every first and third Saturday of the month from 1pm to 3pm.
They also hold their café at Garston Community Centre every second and fourth Saturday of the month from 1pm to 3pm.
Random Café founder, Jane Johnson, said: “It started with a group of friends thinking of ideas to start a business and with food waste being such a big issue, it snowballed from that.
“We did a lot of research into it and found out about The Real Junk Food Project, we made a visit to one of their café’s and the rest is history.”
The Real Junk Food Project is a collaborative effort that aims to bring a radical change in our food system.
The aim is to save edible food that would otherwise not make it to your plate and make it available on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis.
Jane said: “The-pay-as-you-feel scheme is to help those on a tighter budget by proving them with the option of being able to choose what they see fit to pay.
“It provides the community with a place to go and enjoy the café experiences but also a way to get their fruit and veg.
“We are currently searching for a premise where we can open up permanently, however the ultimate goal would be to have our own warehouse.”
