Watford Borough Council (WBC) has announced its new chairman and bid farewell to councillor Dawn Allen-Williamson, who previously held the role.

On Tuesday, May 20, cllr Favour Ezeifedi took over from cllr Allen-Williamson, making history as the first African chairman of the council. First elected in 2015, cllr Ezeifedi represents the Holywell ward in West Watford and has lived in the town for over a decade.

Cllr Ezeifedi said: “I am honoured to serve as the chairman of Watford Borough Council, and to be the first African woman to hold this position. As I take on this role, I am proud to represent the voices and aspirations of all residents, regardless of background.

“Through my volunteering and work with the community, I have witnessed firsthand the power of unity and compassion in bringing about positive change. I am therefore committed to using my platform to continue supporting my chosen charities and so many more organisation in Watford, whose invaluable work strengthens the fabric of our town.”

Cllr Sohail Bashir was announced as vice-chairman.

She has chosen Eternity Community C.I.C, One Vision’s Cancer Champions Project and the Watford African Caribbean Association as her charities, and she will spend her year in office fundraising for them.

This is a tradition of the chairman’s office. Indeed, when cllr Allen-Williamson held the role, a record breaking £17,603 was raised for Ngorli Community Interest Company and the Manna Food Bank at Elim Church.

Bidding farewell to cllr Allen-Williamson, Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor wrote: “Dawn has represented our town with distinction and was the first black chairwoman of Watford Council. She has done so much to include others at civic events, with local schoolchildren playing a key part many times. Thank you Dawn!”
