Young people who triumphed in the London Borough of Hillingdon’s UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) elections have officially kicked off their term of office.
On Monday March 23, Hillingdon’s new UKYP representatives for 2015-16 met Cllr David Simmonds, Deputy Leader of Hillingdon Council and Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, and Tom Murphy, Head of Early Intervention Services, at the Civic Centre in Uxbridge to discuss their priorities for the year ahead. Melissa Braithwaite, 16, from Douay Martyrs sixth form, Talin Aslanian, 16, from Bishop Ramsay sixth form, and their deputy Anurag Mathur, 16, from Ruislip High School, were elected after a hard-fought campaign, which saw them canvassing for votes in schools across the borough. Cllr David Simmonds, Deputy Leader of Hillingdon Council and Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, said: “Hillingdon Council remains committed to supporting local involvement in the UK Youth Parliament and I wish the borough’s newly elected representatives, Melissa, Talin and Anurag, all the best for the coming year. It is good to know that young people in the borough are enthusiastic about participating in the democratic process and campaigning about important issues.” For any young person who lives or goes to school or college in the borough and is interested in politics, Hillingdon Council runs an active Youth Council that meets on Monday afternoons.
