Watford’s strong start to season tempered by Donny defeat

Watford’s strong start to the season at Vicarage Road continued with a thumping 4-1 win over Leeds United on Saturday. A Fernando Forestieri double, a Troy Deeney penalty, and a Daniel Tozser free-kick were enough to see off the spirited visiting side, who had levelled in the opening period through an own goal, and also had two men dismissed during the second. Hornets manager Beppe Sannino was delighted with the victory. He said: “I am happy for our fans, the performance saw the team win. I’m happy with this and the result but my head is already looking towards the next match.” Watford picked up the pace after the interval and were rewarded with a sparking second half. Sannino added: “The first half was difficult because Leeds have good players, we were unlucky with the own goal but second half I spoke with the players in the dressing room at half-time and I wanted them to go for the win. That was the only possible result for us. “We were able to move the ball quicker. We also played closer together and passed the ball more. We found the time we needed on the ball.” However, Sannino’s men were knocked out of the Capital One Cup last night after losing 2-1 at home to League One side Doncaster Rovers. The Orns were punished by starting slowly in both halves as Nathan Tyson and Liam Wakefield’s goals for the visitors were sandwiched by Lloyd Dyer’s equaliser. Sannino was understandably disappointed with the result. He added: “I am disappointed. Doncaster played better than us, they deserved the win,” explained Sannino after the full-time whistle. “I gave a chance to other players tonight. I am always watching the players, both in training and in games. “The players had a chance to give me a difficult decision to pick my next starting XI at the weekend.”
