A student from Westfield Academy who has become a National Citizen Service (NCS) leader met with Watford MP Richard Harrington last month.
Sakib Zahid, 17, is the NCS leader for 2014/15 and was picked due to participating in a further programme to become an ambassador. The Government backed scheme is open to 16 and 17 year olds and it sets challenges for young people so that they can gain skills that they will need for life, and for future employment. In practice NCS has improved confidence, team work, responsibility, and boosted employability, as well as leading to new friendships and benefitting the local community. Mr Harrington said: “Meeting Sakib was great, you can tell how much he has enjoyed and benefitted from this scheme and they have chosen well with him as an NCS Leader! I’ve met well over a hundred young people from Watford who have now taken part in this scheme, and it really is a great initiative. “We are lucky in Watford to have several organisations backing the scheme including Camelot, Herts Fire & Rescue, Reed, Connexions, and of course Watford FC Trust who kindly hosted an NCS fashion show for one of the recent programmes. “For that particular programme the students taking part organised everything for the show themselves, and raised more than £500 for the Peace Hospice, it was great to go down there and see them in action and full credit to everyone involved.” Tracey Paul, of NCS, said: “Becoming an NCS Leader is a fantastic achievement and Sakib was chosen because of his commitment to continuing social action volunteering in his local community in Watford.
