Harrow Council proudly showed its support for the Armed Forces yesterday during a special flag raising ceremony outside Civic Centre. The flag raising starts a week of events throughout the country leading up to National Armed Forces Day on Saturday June 27. Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Krishna Suresh hoisted the Armed Forces Flag and led the ceremony which included prayers, the National Anthem and a speech from the Deputy Lieutenant John Purnell. They were joined by leader of the council, Cllr David Perry and other dignitaries. The ceremony was also attended by 131 Independent Commando Squadron (Royal Engineers), veterans from the Royal British Legion, the Gurkha community and members of the public. Cllr Krishna Suresh said: “I am proud to have raised the Armed Forces flag for Harrow today to show our support for serving and ex-serving members of our forces. It is a chance for all of us to pause to remember and honour our soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, veterans and cadets. “They enable us to live our lives in peace, something we should all be grateful for. So it is important they are shown gratitude for their bravery, courage and sacrifices to protect our freedoms.” The Armed Forces Day flag will fly until Monday June 29.
