Should Deeney be scoring more goals?

Published on: 20th October 2017   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category: Watford FC

Watford fans have often voiced their affection for captain Troy Deeney this season and if you believe the hype he has been remarkable, but has he been lucky to escape criticism? It is often said by fans and pundits that the Hornets are too reliant, and lucky, to have a front pairing of Deeney and Odion Ighalo who between them have scored nearly all of the team’s goals this season. Deeney’s goal return of six premier league goals and Ighalo’s 14, seem like a healthy amount but when it is considered that four of Deeney’s have come from the penalty spot it raises questions about his scoring prolificacy this season. There is no doubting his work rate and enthusiasm to help the team but for a player in such an advanced position, should he be getting heaped with such praise and avoiding criticism having scored just two goals from open play in 23games? It is an alarming thought that if Ighalo gets injured the goals could dry up even further than they have recently. Deeney is by far and away not the worst culprit as only four other Watford players have scored Premier League goals, and only one a piece, but for a man who has not only escaped any kind of discontent from fans but received plaudits it begs the question, does he deserve his place? At almost any other club a forward player with only two goals from open play in 22 would be sweating on his place. In reserve the Hornets have Belgian, Obbi Oularé, chomping at the bit to be given his chance. Despite the lack of goals Deeney’s teamwork has been excellent but as a forward he will be judged on his goals, how long will it take before people question his contribution in the most important area? No doubt Deeney himself will be unhappy with his goal ratio this season having scored more than 20 goals in the previous three seasons in the Championship. In February the Hornets have home games against Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth and away fixtures at Tottenham and Crystal Palace. What do you think of Deeney’s goal return in the Premier League? Should he be exempt from criticism? Email your thoughts to dean@mynewsmag.co.uk
