The identities of the two men who were killed on the M1 yesterday have been released by police. Spencer Bell, 71, from Bushey, died when he stopped to assist 67-year-old Alan Treheway from Watford after he fell from the Bucknalls Lane over bridge at around 10.45am. The northbound carriageway of the motorway was shut while police carried out investigations. Motorists were left stranded and there were long traffic delays. An air ambulance was sent to the scene. A statement from Mr Bell’s family read: “Spencer was the most loving, funny and generous person. Everyone who knew him loved his quick wit and kindness. We cannot imagine life without him, he always had a smile on his face and loved life.” It added: “Knowing he died in such a selfless way is no comfort. But we would not have expected anything else of him. He loved and was loved dearly, by his wife Wendy, his three children, sons-in -laws, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.”
