Veteran Karate champion is hosting self-defence classes

A English and British middleweight champion in karate is holding self-defence classes in Abbots Langley.

Tracey Phipps is a 7th Dan black belt and is one of the most senior female instructors in the UK – one of only a handful heading their own associations. This month marks her 40th anniversary training in Karate.

The new class will teach is held every Thursday morning at Breakspeare School which will teach Krav Maga, an Israeli combat defence.

Tracey said the aim of the classes are to improve people’s street awareness and safety.

She commented: “Krav Maga is a system that cherry picks the best from many other fighting forms, to create an effective defence that is way faster to learn than any one martial art and just as deadly.

“Anyone can improve their street awareness and safety by attending in a relatively short time period. We cover all forms of personal safety from bullying right through to mugging and on to the most severe violent weapon attacks.”

Tracey is an experienced martial artist who has competed at the highest level. She has won 130 trophies over 12 years of competing in Karate as well as 10 team golds for GB international.

She added: “Having spent many years travelling to Europe and hosting instructors here from abroad in order to learn from the very best, I wanted to share my skills. I started the classes mainly to help people who didn’t want or have time to study a martial art.

“As a mother of a teenage daughter I need to know my girl had the ability to protect herself. We have a very successful youth section, youth knife crime is sadly more relevant now than ever before.

“Most parents insure their children have road and water safety skills, sadly self-defence is an equally importance and very necessary lifesaving skill parents need to add to that list! No longer just in deprived areas but here in the leafy green Home Counties, nowhere is exempt.
