New Watford UTC opens for business

Published on: 18th September 2014   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category:

The Watford UTC, a new University Technical College based on Colonial Way, opened its doors to students for the first time earlier this week. The specialist school, which caters for students aged 14-19, celebrated its first day with an opening event attended by parents, governors and sponsors, as well as Watford MP Richard Harrington. Guests were treated to an afternoon tea taster session, served by students studying Hospitality and Event Management. Richard Harrington commented: “An awful lot of work has gone into setting the UTC up over the last couple of years and it is great to see this has paid off, with so many local students excited about their new school. I really believe that this type of school, with a real focus on properly preparing students for whatever they want to do next, is of great benefit to Watford and I am really proud of how it has come together” As one of 13 University Technical Colleges opening around the country this month, The Watford UTC offers a combination of academic and technical courses. Students study for GCSEs or A Levels alongside qualifications in their chosen specialism – Computer Science or Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management. Emma Loveland, principal of The Watford UTC, said: “We are delighted to have welcomed our first cohort of students to the UTC. It’s an exciting time for everyone involved, and it’s wonderful to see them all so full of enthusiasm. We’re now looking forward to starting lessons and introducing the students to our specially-designed curriculum.” The Watford UTC works with a range of major local employers, who will provide realistic hands-on projects for students and work with the UTC to ensure its curriculum meets industry needs. With widely reported skills shortages in both the digital and hospitality industries, the UTC aims to train confident, highly competent individuals to fill the roles of the future. Once completed, the UTC building will house a range of state-of-the-art facilities, including a hotel-style reception, robotics lab and fully operating travel agent. The UTC has a series of open events planned for students wishing to find out more about the college. For more information, visit www.watfordutc.org What do you make of the new UTC?
