Maccabi GB come to town for table tennis showdown

Local Shul members of all ages faced-off in one of the most competitive national table tennis championships in recent memory last month. The National Shul Table Tennis League (NSTTL) Championships, which took place on Sunday, February 28 at the London Academy, Edgware, was held in partnership with Maccabi GB and welcomed over 90 people in total. The key provider of Jewish sport, health and wellbeing programmes in the UK was at hand to ensure that the sport was accessible to all members of the community by hosting the event’s first ever Maccabi GB Table Tennis Fun Zone, which welcomed payers of any age and any ability to play pick-up games and receive coaching tips from Maccabi GB’s sports coordinators. The session saw a range of participants who turned up on the day, including a player who was well into his 80’s to a father who picked up a paddle and taught his four-year-old daughters how to serve. Janice Aarons, Maccabi GB event coordinator, said: “MGB is always looking at innovative ways of attracting members of the community to play sport and be active. The Fun Zone was a wonderful initiative which encouraged people to come along and play when it suited them, and it worked. “There was such a range of players and everyone was laughing and enjoying themselves. There is a lot of talented sportspeople in the community and we hope sessions like this encourage them to attend more days like this. Thank you to Adam Black and Jeremy Banks for putting on a top competition and for keeping Jewish table tennis moving in the right direction.”
