Following on from last month’s double page spread in My Northwood & Moor Park News regarding the William Jolle pub being set to close, a resident who was instrumental in getting a Wetherspoons in Northwood Hills has expressed his disappointment about the issue. Back in 1998, Martin Weedon saw a nationwide campaign by Wetherspoons chief executive, Tim Martin, on how a Wetherspoons would benefit their town. Seventeen years later, Martin told My Northwood & Moor Park News that he can’t believe they have made the decision to sell the Jolle, on Joel Street. He said: “When I saw what Wetherspoons were introducing I immediately thought that we could do with one in our community. “Wetherspoons have always had a policy of asking people to let them know if an area would benefit from a new outlet. I wrote to them and the William Jolle duly opened and myself and my girlfriend went to a complementary pre-opening meal. “Now they want to close it and sell it on. I certainly don’t think Wetherspoons can cite a lack of footfall as a reason for closure as it is always packed. “The main disappointment for me now is if it goes down the same route as when they closed the Wetherspoons in Northwood, which is now called the Misty Moon. The quality of beers went down and the price immediately went up.” Martin also explained that the petition has now been sent to head office with more than 300 signatures on it and he hopes that this forces the bosses at Wetherspoons to change their minds.
