The MP for Kings Langley, Mike Penning, captained the House of Commons tug-of-war team to victory over the House of Lords on June 2, raising money for a cancer charity in the process. The 29th annual Commons v Lords competition took place Westminster College Gardens and raised money for Macmillan Cancer Research. Mr Penning said: “This is a fun way to raise a significant amount of money for Macmillan Cancer Research who do incredible and vital work in cancer care. “It is, of course, a key event in the Parliamentary calendar and I am delighted that we have beaten the Lords again.” The cheering crowds also got a chance to watch rival city firms, industry giants, armed forces and fire crews flex their pulling power. Teams took to the rope whilst BBC Radio 5 live’s Chief Political Correspondent John Pienaar compèred and the Tug of War Association adjudicated the matches. Simon Phillips, director of fundraising at Macmillan Cancer Support said: “Macmillan’s Parliamentary Tug of War has become a firm favourite in the Westminster social calendar pulling politicians together to put their weight behind a great cause. It’s been fantastic – the competition tough, the laughter loud and the incredibly generous donations are going to go a long way in helping Macmillan make sure no one faces cancer alone.” Pete Redfern, Taylor Wimpey chief executive, commented: “Taylor Wimpey is very proud to sponsor Macmillan’s House of Lords vs. House of Commons Tug of War for the 29th consecutive year. Since our partnership began in 1987, we have helped Macmillan raise over £3million for people affected by cancer and their families. As one of the largest homebuilders in the UK, we strive to make a difference and are pleased with the significant positive impact that Taylor Wimpey continues to have on Macmillan and the people it supports.” Now that there are 2.5million people living with cancer in the UK, the funds raised through events like Macmillan’s Tug of War are more vital than ever in helping ensure that no one faces cancer alone. In 2014 the event raised a staggering £141,000 and it is hoped to increase that this year.
