Oliver Dowden, Member of Parliament for Hertsmere, has been promoted to Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Defence, Sir Michael Fallon MP, in the Government reshuffle following the recent General Election.
Parliamentary Private Secretaries (PPS) assist senior government ministers and are selected from backbench MPs to be the ‘eyes and ears’ of their Minister in the House of Commons. They advise the Minister on the state of parliamentary or party opinion, and act as a two-way channel of communication between the Minister and backbench MPs. However, PPSs remain private MPs and Mr Dowden will not be taking an additional salary for his new role.
Speaking following the news of his appointment, Mr Dowden said: ‘It was an honour to be made PPS to the Defence Secretary. I look forward to working with Sir Michael and supporting him in the vital task of sustaining our world class armed forces and keeping our country safe.
‘My new duties will absolutely not however, distract from my campaigning priorities in Hertsmere and I will continue to work to protect and enhance what makes our area such a special place to live.
‘I’ll keep pushing to improve local infrastructure, deliver better state education and defend our precious green open spaces, as I have over the last two years as your MP.’
