DRAINAGE ISSUES: Chorleywood residents frustrated with lack of progress in fixing blockage under M25

Published on: 15th June 2021   |   By: Amneet Kaur   |   Category: Uncategorized

Lack of progress in fixing two streets’ surface water drainage problems have left two Chorleywood families feeling ‘frustrated’ as one has also been left to deal with garden pests.

We previously reported on the matter back in February and unfortunately since then not much has changed.

The issue started in September 2019 and it affects the corner of Wyatts Road and Chess Way in Chorleywood.

Thames Water and Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) have confirmed the issue is caused by a collapse under the hard shoulder of the M25.

Neighbours Jaynie Morgan and Natalie Stack, who have been dealing with the issue for almost two years and came very close to having flooded houses back in June 2020, spoke to ChorleywoodNews.

Jayne said: “Over the past few months Thames Water and Herts Council have repeatedly drained, explored and CCTV-ed the drainage system and are now, it seems, in agreement on what needs to be done.

“Some work to assist drainage in Chess Way and to line pipes under our gardens is to be commissioned by Herts Council and Thames Water.

“The bad news is that Highways England have been contacted but now I find that the person who has been helping us at the council and his contact at Highways England are departing their jobs and we have no information whatsoever on the status of the issue.  It’s unbelievable.

“I am not sure that much communication is happening between all the parties involved in rectifying the issue.”

Natalie instead added: “Both our properties have been directly affected by this, there is a constant river of surface water now at the end of the gardens, the drains have been left open.

“I have four children and there is an open drain in my garden, we now seem to have a problem with some sort of vermin in our home – we’ve had pest control out and they seem to think it may be due to open drains. It’s a very upsetting situation.

“They are literally waiting for the M25 to collapse before they take this seriously.”

A joint statement from Thames Water and Highways England said:

“Working with Hertfordshire County Council and Thames Water, we have carried out extensive investigations into the cause of the leaks in a pipe running beneath the M25 and properties in Wyatt’s Road in Chorleywood.

“Connect Plus, our M25 contractor, will carry out repairs to the section of pipe under the M25, and Thames Water will repair it beneath the properties. We are working hard with our partners to minimise any disruption to local residents and road users and would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused while we carry out these repairs.”

Hertfordshire County Council have also been contacted for comment.
