On a poor night for the Tories, Oliver Dowden was re-elected as the MP for Hertsmere, although he had his majority cut by Labour.
Dowden received 31,928 votes, a 61.1 per cent share, and 1.8 per cent more than 2015.
However, Fiona Smith of the Labour Party received 14,977 of the votes, a 28.7 per cent share, a 6.2 per cent increase on two years ago.
At his acceptance speech, Dowden said he was honoured to represent his home patch and paid tribute to his competitors.
He said: “It genuinely is a great honour and a privilege to be re-elected and I am so looking forward to serving our area in the coming weeks, months and years ahead.
“I’d also like to congratulate our opponents.
“Lots of people in politics get knocked but the fact that all of you have been out working hard, campaigning to convince people of your arguments, is a testimony to the power of politics particularly when we see our values under threat from the atrocities we have seen in recent weeks.”
He added he was also thankful to his Conservative team and family.
Labour candidate Fiona Smith said: “It was a tremendous result. We strived over adversity really as Hertsmere was always going to be difficult – but what seemed to happen was a 3,000 increase from 2015 and that will provide a foundation for the team in the next General Election and also, realistically, in local elections.”
