Appeal for witnesses to burglaries in Watford and St Albans

Published on: 9th December 2014   |   By: The Newsdesk   |   Category:

Police are appealing for witnesses and information regarding two burglaries that took place on Friday December 5 in the Watford and St Albans areas.

The first burglary occurred at around 1.10pm at a home in South Riding, Bricket Wood. Four men forced their way into a house and detained the resident whilst they searched the premises. They left shortly after and are believed to have made off in the direction of St Luke’s Church. The second burglary occurred at around 1.50pm, when police were called to an address in The Gossamers, Watford. Four men knocked at a house and thinking no one was in attempted to force their way through the back door. However, the occupants were home at the time of the incident and the offenders fled upon realising that the house was occupied, towards the Meriden Shopping Centre. The police helicopter and a large number of officers, including a dog unit, attended the area in an attempt to locate the offenders. They were not located but enquiries are on-going. The four men are described as:

  • Speaking with an accent, possibly Eastern European, and spoke to each other in another language.
  • One was of stocky build, short black untidy short hair and 20-30 years old. Wearing a beige coloured hoody with zip down the front and hood up.
  • One was of slim build about 24 years old, with short black hair wearing a black jacket over thick dark grey jumper, dark blue jeans.
  • Two were of slim build, around 23 – 24 years old, wearing dark clothes with hoods up and scarves around their faces.

Detective Sergeant Matt Waylett of the Watford Local Crime Unit said: “Incidents like these are very rare in Hertfordshire and burglars nearly always target empty homes. It may be that the offenders didn’t realise that these homes were occupied, as in the second incident they fled as soon as they discovered there were people at home. “Whilst no one was harmed in these crimes it has obviously left the victims shaken and we are pursuing several lines of enquiry to ensure these men are caught. We suspect that these crimes may be linked. I urge anyone who was in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious to call us immediately.” Anyone with any information in relation to this incident should call Hertfordshire Constabulary’s non-emergency number 101, quoting reference C4/14/2528. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
