Sponsoring local football, cricket and rugby clubs is a staple act of community support for many estate agencies. But Gibbs Gillespie, which has 15 offices across London, Middlesex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, decided a year ago to back a more unusual local sporting endeavour and it paid off handsomely last Friday. The agency can now claim to be in the corner of the newly crowned English Middleweight Champion, Elliott Matthews, who they sponsor. Matthews secured the title at York Hall, in Bethnal Green on December 1 win a unanimous points win against unbeaten prospect Grant Dennis. James Gibbs was ringside as were fight legends John Conteh MBE and Floyd Mayweather Senior. He said: “I was approached by Elliott and he told us he needed a team of sponsors behind him to turn his dream of winning the title into a reality. I’ve always been a fan of boxing and I was impressed with his determination and focus, so we decided to support him. “Watching him win the title in a really tough fight was a great experience and the publicity we have gained from being associated with Elliott has been very useful. “We’ve sponsored dozens of clubs and groups over the 26 years we’ve been in business, but this is certainly one of the most interesting we’ve got involved with. “We’re proud to sponsor him and this is good exposure for Team GG as it’s always good be in the corner of winners, especially ones with a great right hander.” Elliott said: “I can’t thank Gibbs Gillespie enough for their support along with my other sponsors. Their generosity and belief in me really spurred me especially when I had to dig deep in the latter rounds of the fight. The sponsorship has made it possible for me to really concentrate on my training over the last 12 months.” Photo credit Danny Clifford
